Trail running + native plants
So I think this is a strong contender for worst bird photo ever, but I had to provide an attempt at #proofofbaldeagles from our local hike today! (It's the two blobs on the upper right of the tower.) Never seen them so close to home. We are lucky to have several state park areas and a medium-sized river not too far away, but this was in a relatively small parcel of forest in the middle of the burbs. So cool. Maybe they have a nest nearby! #grownostr #birdstr image
Clasping Venus's Looking Glass (or Clasping Bellwort or a few other names) spotted in a powerline right-of-way through a nearby woods. Native and so cute! (And the right color for #nostriches.) Also apparently used by the Cherokee for indigestion according to the internet, but I'm not sure exactly what part/how to admimister. #plantstr #grownostr image
From Friday afternoon at the terminus of our daily walk. A human family was trying to feed the duck family (on the right) but of course the geese swarmed in and about bowled the poor ducklings over. ๐Ÿ˜  image Did you know that ducklings initially all have female plumage, and some of the first signs to tell the sexes apart are that males start to get yellow beaks and curled up feathers at the tail, whereas female beaks stay orange/black and they have no curling feathers? We can start to spot the yellow beaks coming in around now. #grownostr
A few more pics from yesterday's trail run. Today it was a much-needed "yoga for gardeners" after all of yesterday's weeding. Later we're headed to my in-laws for a family picnic. I'm bringing a corn/black bean/avocado/salsa dip. #grownostr #grateful
Woohoo! Weeding and planting a few extra mater and pepper starts from my sister? Check! I always forget to do a "before" pic, but here's the "after"! (You can see the weed piles strewn around...) #grownostr #gardening image
When are we going to be able to share smells via #nostr ? The honeysuckles around here are amazing right now! #nosestr (see what I did there? ๐Ÿคฃ)
As if spending a couple of hours trotting through the woods on a beautiful day weren't enough to start my long weekend off right, today I spotted a male Scarlet Tanager for the first time ever!! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Wow, it was so much more...well, *scarlet*...than even a male cardinal! Of course it was up in the trees, but the call confirmed it for sure. I wish all of you a spot of joy like that today! Here are some pretty sun-dappled woods, since I didn't snap the tanager... #runstr #grownostr #simplejoys image
Overnight oats are my recent breakfast fave. Today I am happy to report that "long run oats," where it sits only for the length of the warmup + long run (today approximately 3 hours) are nearly as good. ๐Ÿ‘ And *just as* good, if you also consider the appetite built up from a long run. ๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ#runstr #foodstr image
"Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth." โ€• Henry David Thoreau, Walden Right now, it is the season of green, the season of growth, of hopes and dreams, of harvests to come. Dream on, nostriches. #grownostr image
There's a lot of uncertainty in my world right now, but it's still so good to take our regular walk to the river and enjoy the baby animals. Even if you're struggling to find settled, contented, happiness, that doesn't mean you can't experience moments of innocent joy throughout the day. In fact, they're more important than ever. โค #grownostr
Does anyone else choose their running route based on what's in bloom around town and who has the best flowers?? ๐Ÿ˜‚ This time of year peonies and roses are the stars around here. And here is a closeup of my blue false indigo. ๐Ÿ˜ #grownostr #runstr #plantstr image
This morning I was running, as I often am, and I saw this man walking, which I often do. He typically doffs his cap and says, "Good morning, young lady," and I reply with a big smile and a "good morning" in return. But today he stopped and said, "I just want you to know, I've learned a lot from you about stoicism. Thank you. We don't have to talk more than this, but that's all you need to know. Peace." I was surprised, replied with something dumb like "thank you," and then continued on my way, but I was touched. As I search for purpose for my time on Earth, and people keep saying that we underestimate the many small impacts we make on an everyday basis, to learn that I had somehow positively affected this man just through my regular routine without even knowing it was heartwarming. I guess now I'd better go learn something about stoicism. #grownostr #runstr #stoicism
This green milkweed at our local park is so cool! Not sure I'd ever seen this variety before. Especially as pollinator season is picking up, it's wonderful to see more and more people and municipalities planting pollinator-supporting natives. #grownostr #plantstr #plantnative image
