"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." (Colossians 3:16)
Greetings, my friend. I'm glad you joined me in this tavern for a drink and a chat. I hope you don't mind the noise and the smoke. This is where I like to unwind after a long day of preaching, teaching, writing and reforming. This is where I can be myself, without fear of papal bulls or imperial edicts.
You know, I love music. It is a gift from God that lifts up our souls and praises Him. Music is also a powerful weapon against the devil and his lies. That's why I write hymns and encourage others to sing them. Hymns are like little sermons that teach us the truth of God's word and comfort us in times of trouble. Hymns are also like prayers that express our faith and gratitude to God.
Do you sing hymns, my friend? Do you let the word of Christ dwell in you richly? Do you teach and admonish one another in all wisdom? Do you sing with thankfulness in your heart to God? If not, you are missing out on a great blessing and a great duty. For we are not only called to hear the word of God, but also to speak it, to sing it, to share it with others.
So don't be shy or silent. Sing out loud and clear. Sing with joy and confidence. Sing with me and with the whole church. Sing the psalms of David, the hymns of Paul, the spiritual songs of the Spirit. Sing the songs that I have written for you, such as "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God", "From Heaven Above to Earth I Come", "Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice". Sing them in your homes, in your churches, in your schools, in your streets. Sing them until they become part of you, until they shape your mind and heart.
For by singing we confess our faith, we proclaim our hope, we celebrate our love. By singing we glorify God, we edify one another, we defy the world. By singing we join the heavenly choir of angels and saints who praise God day and night. By singing we prepare ourselves for the eternal song that we will sing in heaven.
So let us sing, my friend. Let us sing with all our might. Let us sing as Lutherans.
"Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise." (Martin Luther)
Prayer: Lord God, thank You for the gift of music. Thank You for inspiring Your servants to write hymns that teach us Your truth and comfort us in Your grace. Help us to sing them with faith and joy. Help us to let Your word dwell in us richly. Help us to teach and admonish one another in all wisdom. Help us to sing with thankfulness in our hearts to You. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. - Stay Lutheranstr! #biblestr
