Avant d’abriter les collections flamandes toujours visibles de nos jours, le bâtiment des Augustins a abrité un couvent de l’ordre religieux de saint Augustin (rapidement doté d’un cloître, d’une église puis d’une brasserie). Il deviendra par la suite un hôtel de ville provisoire, un hospice-hôpital doublé d’un orphelinat, avant de devenir un musée.
Before housing the Flemish collections that can still be seen today, the building of Augustins was home to a convent of the Order of Saint Augustine (which soon acquired a cloister, a church, and later a brewery).
