To me it boils down to this. I was sold a "cold" storage device. "Hardware wallets are designed to keep private keys off the internet and away from the online connection points that hackers can get to." Quote from Ledger's documentation. I don't care that it's split into three shards and encrypted. Ledger's now have the ability to send information about your keys to third parties "online". Do you now see how it completely defeats the purpose of a "cold" storage product with a feature update? Doesn't matter if I need to opt-in. The attack vector is now there. This is now a hot-wallet to me.
