One quick note on the technology we are using on reading the pedometer on Android:
In the past reading sensor data was only possible while the app was open. With the latest API (hardware <-> OS) it is possible to close the app and when coming back still have the step count in place.
Differences between iOS and Android:
- for iOS users: they can access step counts even before date of app installation
- Android users can only track their steps after they installed the app and gave permission to read activity data
- Android users must NOT uninstall the app (specially not during a challenge) because they loose access to the sensor data and will start from zero
- on both OS you are "allowed" to fully close the app and reopen it and not loose your step count (only iOS users may uninstall the app and re-install)
Known bugs:
August 2025:
- when coming back to the app the progress on a challenge may show 0. This is typically solved by walking a few steps with the phone or switching tabs in the app front and back.
- some users report having trouble that their move-to-earn tab stopped counting while they still have the steps inside the health tab. This can only be a UI glitch since the access to the step count is the same on both ends. Please reopen the app or switch tabs.
If any serious bugs kept you from participating in a challenge, please repost to us nostr:nprofile1qythwue69uhnzwfj9cunjt35xchrzvfj8g6rsdpcqywhwumn8ghj7er9wchxummnw3e8qmrp09nhymm4dejzucm0d5qzpava9vgvye0hzhj34gctglmsaaeg0fm2f4mvwjjkdtctsm3y9a83ym5v08
There will be a next challenge.
We will definitely investigate GrapheneOS a little more as there seems to be some issues lately.

Android user's guide to get access to your phone pedometer
We use the latest google service for reading pedometer data. Those were released around May 24.
Please make sure you have the latest services installed:
1. Open the Play Store app on your device.
2. Tap the search bar and type “Google Play services”.
3. Select the result that has the Google LLC developer name.
4. The same “Update” / “Open” button logic applies as described above.
Tip: If you see a “Update” button, tap it and wait for the download & install to finish. Afterward, you can verify the version number by scrolling down to the About this app section.
For GrapheneOS (with Sandbox Play Services or side-loaded):
?? Do you need Google Play Store to use the Play Services on GrapheneOS? No. The sandboxed Play Store includes its own copy of Google Play Services, isolated from the rest of the system. If you install the regular Play Store (via a GMS add‑on), you’ll also need the system‑wide Google Play Services.
Open Settings → Apps → All apps.
1. Scroll to Google Play services (the one that belongs to the Sandbox).
2. Tap it → scroll to the Version field at the bottom.
3. Compare it to the latest version listed on the Play Store page or to the version list on the official release notes:
You can disable the sandboxed Google Play Services after you’ve installed them: Go to Settings → Privacy → Sandbox → App list, find Google Play Services and toggle Enabled off. The sandboxed Play Store will stop working, and any apps that depend on GPS will fall back to “Google Play Services not available”.

https://metr.org/blog/2025-07-10-early-2025-ai-experienced-os-dev-study/
I have read the full paper and I think their main claim is to be taken with a grain of salt.
This study is performed on developers who have been working for at least 5 years on the particular codebase.
That said, the biggest take away is they all underestimated their solving performance compared to when using Cursor with Claude 3.7
Even after finishing tasks with AI they still thought to have been faster, while the control group showed the average task performance speed was lower with AI.
The main claim of the RCT study is "developers perform 19% slower when using AI". But, the charts at the end have quite broad variances, so this claim would not hold a review I guess. Not significant enough.
But definitely AI usage did show any advantage in THIS context.
