The narrative on the GDP data is bogus. The annualized contraction is -0.3%. Yet the sum of consumer spending and gross private investment increased by 3% this quarter vs 2.9% in the 4th quarter of 2024. So what caused the "decline"? A 41% increase in imports. The Trump tariffs caused a front-loading of imports which was the largest non-pandemic increase since 1969. This alone subtracted 4.8 percentage points from GDP growth! There is no real, sustainable contraction of the economy - not at this point anyway
