This website in June of 2010 gave away five bitcoin at a time for free. Yes, completely for free. The developer stocked it with 1,100 bitcoin and the initial limit was five bitcoin per IP address. They wanted the website to be simple way to learn about bitcoin. One visitor collected five bitcoin, felt bad, and donated fifty. Another used Tor to collect fifty in minutes, then returned them and explained how he had done it. Two days after opening, the faucet held 1,570 bitcoin. People were donating faster than it was giving the coins away. There was a time in history when you couldn’t even give away bitcoins for free because people thought they had no value.

Samsung once created a bitcoin mining machine assembled from forty old Galaxy S5 smartphones. The project came from Samsung’s C-Lab in 2017 at a developer conference, and formed part of an effort to reuse old electronics. The phones ran a specially designed operating system instead of their normal Android installation. An older Galaxy tablet and an Ubuntu laptop were used in the setup. Samsung presented it as an upcycling demonstration. The reporting did not establish that it was a profitable mining operation or had discovered a #Bitcoin block. The hardware was a collection of retired phones, not purpose-built mining chips.

The Bitcoin source code is stored in the Arctic. In 2020, Bitcoin’s source-code repository was included in GitHub’s Arctic Code Vault project. GitHub took a snapshot of the active public Bitcoin and other important open-source project repositories, recorded 21 terabytes of data on 186 reels of archival film, and transported the collection to Svalbard, Norway. It was deposited on July 8 in a decommissioned coal mine beneath the permafrost. The storage project was designed with a thousand-year preservation goal. What went into the mine was Bitcoin’s software source code, not everyone’s bitcoin, and not their private keys. #Bitcoin joined a physical archive that also included Linux and Python.
