NIP Numbers are dead.
Webs of Trust is digging their grave.
There is NO REALITY where a decentralized NIP proposal, review, and even finalization process can result in a NUMBERED NIP (or even a numbered KIND?). Universal numbering systems can only be managed by a central gate keeper.
This is not a matter of achieving consensus, it's a matter of defining WHAT IS consensus. In an environment where ANY npub can propose a new standard, and ANY app (client, relay, or otherwise) can implement ANY proposal at any time, WHO IS TO SAY when consensus is reached on any proposal's "officialness", let alone it's "official number"?
As soon as THE NOSTR has reliable WoT tools for qualifying "relative officialness" (prolly some hybrid of "well written", "well implemented", and "stable" within someone's network) then ANY individual CAN AND WILL do so on their own. At this stage, numbered NIPs will only be legacy.
This horse has already left the barn.
