#Meshtastic Tip OTA firmware upgrades via Bluetooth are a useful way to update RAK4631 nodes that are in difficult to access locations. They don’t work well from iOS devices however as I discovered the hard way.. The firmware update failed and left the node in DFU mode needing to be connected via USB to update. Apparently this is a common issue trying to update using iOS. I haven’t tested an OTA update using Android yet but I have heard from others that it works well.

The problem is there aren’t many options for people in living in remote parts of Australia. NBN Satellite is slow with high latency, NBN fixed wireless hasn’t been good either (although has improved with recent upgrades), and 4G/5G coverage is limited outside cities in the more remote parts of the country. Starlink is currently the best option available for people in these areas.

Node now installed in the pole mount enclosure. I originally wanted the antenna facing down to avoid water getting in but that wasn’t really possible to do with this enclosure due to the way the cable entrance holes are drilled so it may need some silicon and self amalgamating tape around the antenna connector to ensure that it is waterproof. #meshtastic View quoted note →

Testing a new Meshtastic node. The plan for this one is to have it mounted on a tower where it will be powered by PoE from a Netonix switch (similar to the one shown) so I’ve confirmed that it powers up using the 48V passive PoE that these switches can supply. The node is using the RAK Wireless RAK4631 core module on the RAK19009 power slot baseboard and the RAK19017 PoE module. I’ve got a small pole mount enclosure to mount it in now that I know it will work. #meshtastic image

On the fly Friday evening change to work around the issue was successfully applied without making the issue worse or breaking anything else.. 😅 While these issues aren’t fun to deal with at the time, the positive is that there is always something new learned from them. View quoted note →

Why do the weird network faults always occur just before 5pm on a Friday afternoon…? 😭

Wasn’t a great start to October being sick with the flu for a week but still managed to average over 10k steps per day. The weather is warming up, days are getting longer, and hopefully things will start slowing down at work. More time to get out so November should be better. #proofofwalk image
