We share daily father-son dialogues explaining Bitcoin on Twitter and here on nostr. On Mondays, we send out a recap newsletter with the coolest things Dad has learned during the past week. If you are new to Bitcoin, this will help you get started. If you are already on your journey, this will help you stay up to date, keep away from scams, and avoid the common pitfalls. Our DM is open for your Bitcoin related questions.
image Dad: Son, why do your siblings still have no Bitcoin position? Son: Hi Dad, Good question.... I talked to them again and again and again about it, last time at the latest all-time high. I will do it again, at the next all-time high, every all-time high until they get some sats. Dad: Let us hope that the next all-time high will not be long in coming. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, had a bad day today... I am still thinking about the huge investment I made at all-time high. Son: Hi Dad, I'm sorry to hear that. Here's the pep talk you might just need to hear: Think of all those who did the same and sold in panic with a double-digit loss. Understanding Bitcoin is your best protection. Confidence in the Bitcoin revolution is key. Dad: Exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you, son! #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, how do you explain bitcoin to your boomer friends? Asking for a friend. Dad: Son, behave yourself! Son: This was just a question, Dad. :) Dad: Bitcoin is "Cloud Money". You can upload it, store it and download it. Simple, right? :-) Son: .. and with "Lightning" you can even stream money. Dad: Lightning? Son: The "Layer 2 instant payment system" thing, that settles withing a fraction of a second. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, why do you not use numbers based the word’s indexed number in the BIP39 list instead of the first 4 letters of the recovery word? Son: Hi Dad, That's a good question. Let's quote the BIP39 creators to answer it. "A mnemonic code or sentence is superior for human interaction compared to the handling of raw binary or hexadecimal representations of a wallet seed. The sentence could be written on paper or spoken over the telephone" I think it is wrong to use numbers when the creators intentionally designed the standard so that we use words. Dad: Ok, makes sense. Thanks. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, Become your own bank and stop worrying about banks going bankrupt. Dad: Son, mother and I now have a fraction of our reserve in bitcoin. Son: Great. Every fraction of a bitcoin you own is a safer and more secure store of value compared to the fractional reserve scam used by traditional banks. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, did you back up your 24 words in steel? Dad: Son, no, not yet. Son: Without your 24 recovery words, there is no way to access your funds. I can't stress this enough. Get a "Cryptosteel Capsule". These solid metal devices are cheap, easy to use and super reliable. Dad, are you using a passphrase? Dad: Yes, you suggested using one. Son: Yeah, that's great. However, you have to secure the passphrase as well. In that case, get a "Capsule Duo", one for the recovery seed words and one for the passphrase. #Bitcoin
image Son: Hi Dad, Men lie, women lie, but code and numbers don't. Dad: Son, you are speaking the truth. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, what are "sats"? Son: Hi Dad, Sats are like bitcoin, just smaller. Dad: Smaller? Son: Yeah, a smaller denomination. There are 100,000,000 sats in every bitcoin. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, retirement is the worst thing you can do for your health. Dad: Son, this also applies to wealth. #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, Bitcoin will improve the standard of living around the world within a generation or two. Dad: Son, and how is this to happen? Son: Let's quote "The Bitcoin Standard" here: “The better the money is at holding its value, the more it incentivizes people to delay consumption and instead dedicate resources for production in the future, leading to capital accumulation and improvement of living standards” #Bitcoin
image Son: Dad, there's no friend as loyal as a bitcoin. Dad: Son, "as a book". Ernest Hemingway said, "There is no friend as loyal as a book." #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, now I have two wallets and too many passphrases. What do you suggest? Son: Hi Dad, Get one more and go multisig. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, what is a passphrase? Son: Hi Dad, The BIP39 standard supports an optional 25th word, a so-called passphrase. The passphrase encrypts the seed and creates a new wallet. Dad: Son, do I have limitations? Size, or something? Son: On the Coldcard hardware wallet for example, passphrases are limited to 100 characters in length. The on-screen interface supports ASCII characters only. Dad: Okay, that is a powerful feature! Son: So little effort and so much more security. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, what is an "Epoch" in Bitcoin? Son: Hi Dad, With a "Bitcoin epoch" people usually mean a period of roughly 4 years (210,000 blocks and about 10 minutes between them) with a specific mining reward. The first epoch started with the genesis block in 2009, and a block reward of 50 bitcoin. From May 2020 until some time in 2024, we're in the 4th mining epoch, and the block reward is at 6.25 bitcoin per block. Dad: I see a bitcoin supply squeeze coming. Son: Dad, me too. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, is it possible to sell Bitcoins? Son: Hi Dad, Yes, it's possible. Most exchanges that let you buy bitcoins also let you sell bitcoin, for a fee, of course. So, ... Could you sell? Yeah, sure. Should you sell? Hell, no! #Bitcoin
image Dad: So, son, bitcoin is the hardest money? Son: Hi Dad, Yeah, for sure. Dad: I rarely hear you talk about remaining risks like broken cryptography by Quantum Computing, Implementation failures and mining centralization. Are they fixable? Son: Probably. Broken crypto is a threat to all online security, and the majority of precious metals are simply traded electronically. I, personally, would not bet on gold. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, owning a fraction of a Bitcoin is life-changing. Son: Hi Dad, I am not sure if your 200 bucks worth of bitcoin will be life-changing one day. ;-) But yes. Dad: It is life-changing. I am reading more today and question the mainstream media more than ever. Son: I truly agree, Dad. Many more things will change when you fall deeper down the rabbit hole. Dad: Son, what changed for you? Son: Everything – from steak to stacking SATs. #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, understanding what Bitcoin is, is damn hard. Explaining it to someone else is even harder. Have you tried? Son: Dad, you're absolutely right on that. Aside from the fact that Bitcoin is different things to different people, the term "Bitcoin" is also used equally for different things. Dad: The confusion is immense. Son: "Giacomo Zucco" tweeted no long ago, "Bitcoin's Layer 1 Protocol (BP) is about time. Bitcoin's Layer 2 Protocol (LNP) is about space." I really like the concept of "BP" and "LNP". Dad, what do you think comes on top of "LNP"? #Bitcoin
image Dad: Son, impressive how to pay with the lightning network in the blink of an eye. Son: Hi Dad, Spend your sats responsibly. #Bitcoin
