Guénon on the Superstition of Life Modernity mocks traditional civilizations for being "unchanging" but Guénon asserts this stability is based on eternal metaphysical principles. Tradition adapts only when necessary without ever abandoning these principles. Western civilization confuses immutability with stagnation because they can’t think beyond images or sensation. Their imagination has replaced intellect. They’re trapped in dualisms and can’t synthesize, binaries like rationalism vs. intuition, or matter vs. life. The modern West didn’t really evolve away from tradition but rather it broke off. Like a branch from the trunk. And now it glorifies its own agitation and calls it “progress”, basically aimless movement mistaken for true meaning. Modern man moves and trembles in "incessant agitation" and cannot imagine a state of stillness. He spins in place and exalts motion without direction. He’s literally addicted to change for its own sake and calls it “progress" Guénon names the most pathological feature of modern thought: the pursuit of research for its own sake, where there's no resolution to settle at, just endless movement. Modern philosophy intentionally avoids truth because truth would mean the end of motion. So modern thought never really leaves the plane of the "sensible". It might shift emphasis, like from matter to life, from reason to intuition, but it never truly transcends. Only a "feeling" masquerading as depth, and restlessness sold as this timeless wisdom.
