Nostr is still a tiny corner of the internet, but damn if it’s not one of the most interesting. Grateful to be a part of this community. Here’s to more greatness in 2024 and beyond.

With the increasing amount of generative AI content, the greater risk to free speech is not explicit censorship, but in widespread confusion and mistrust. As people feel more fragmented, they feel more disconnected, and they feel more lost. Community networks of trusted relays could provide protective measures against this.

Nostr has identity and auth baked in to the protocol, but don't limit yourself to thinking of it as yet another way to SSO into a website. Consider how it can be used to seamlessly connect to a collection of overlapping wireguard networks that run trusted relays for example. It isn't necessarily about private networks, it's about trusted networks. Implementing filters at the proper layer provides scale and flexibility that separates network operators and relay operators.

One of the things I love most about the V4V livestream @OpenMike put on last night was a reminder of the value of shared experience. It made nostr feel more alive, and more connected to the real world.

For those of you in the stochastic parrot camp, write a paragraph on something interesting, whatever you want. Paste those words into a prompt and ask for critical feedback. Be sincere, engage with an open and curious mind, ask follow up questions. Then explain how a conversation about the thoughts from your own mind is a statistical parlor trick based on nothing original. Do you value your thoughts?

Been thinking about the convergence of Bitcoin and AI. The Bitcoin network is not what you would call “intelligent” in that it performs the straightforward tasks of an entry-level accountant. The most interesting thing is how Its monumental impact on the global monetary system isn't a result of complex cognitive abilities; the real value lies in its ability to operate independently, free from human interference. The relevance to AI is we have a textbook example of a thriving system that is serving basic human needs, all while operating completely outside the boundaries of our control. It’s a peaceful coexistence, which ironically was designed to protect ourselves from each other. People talk a lot about the promises and/or threats of generalized intelligence, we should also remember to spend equal time discussing the role of autonomy and neutrality in the design of our AI systems.

Conflicting feelings about the OpenAI situation. On one hand GPT-4 is one of the most impactful products ever created. On the other hand, Worldcoin.

Is there a line between certitude and stubbornness in predictions? Probability does not care, it’s only the outcomes that matter.

Anytime you get an email from a company that includes the phrase “Why are we making this change?" it's never a positive sign.
