Here’s an interesting thing: My wife (and I) got new iPhones and they now have an always on display. My wife, after a couple of days, decided to turn her display off. I asked why? She explained that it wasn’t normal and she felt uncomfortable. I asked if she was ever uncomfortable with her Nokia dumb phone back in the day, as that monochrome LCD display was always on. She said no. I asked why and she couldn’t explain it. Not being able to see a display all the time is not desirable, but because it became normalised, the re-emergence of what should be normal became dystopian and uncomfortable. This is a metaphor for the Overton window and societal shift into a dystopian society.
