When talking about the right to home defence in Australia, I had some wanker try to tell me "if you fight an intruder that means you value your stuff more than their life!" Truth is, if someone breaks into your house, it means they value your stuff more than their life. They don't know what's in that house, they don't know how well the occupants can handle themselves or what their pets are capable of. And while politicians and bureaucrats will pose all sorts of questions and scenarios to try and justify outlawing people's right to defend themselves, at the end of the day it's an inherent right.
