Coffee + Butter = Good morning #Saturday #grownostr #coffee
These premier one energizers have worked wonders helping us get established with pigs and sheep. They pack a pretty good punch on smaller areas when used with netting or poly wire. We are working on an upgrade with the new tensile pasture. Moving to a 6 joule cyclops energizer wired up with a battery and solar panel due to the location of our pasture. Excited to get it out but not sure it’ll happen in the rain this weekend. More to come! #homesteading #permaculture #pigs #sheep #grownostr image
Anyone else getting an error uploading image message when trying to post?
We routinely use this poly wire and a few step in posts to break up our pasture. Very simple to use with a reel and does the job more times than not. I would not recommend as a perimeter because it doesn’t always get the charge that we get with netting or tensile. That being said, as long as there is ample grass, the sheep don’t even test it and it serves as more of a physical barrier. #homesteading #sheep #permaculture #carnivore #grownostr image
Really enjoy the simplicity of eating a carnivore diet. The answer to “What’s for dinner” is always meat. Pretty much narrows it down to beef, pork, eggs or chicken in that order. Followed by a big glob of butter or wagyu tallow. #carnivore #meat
Anyone have experience with Japanese Knotweed? When we moved in, the yard was overrun with this. Through constant cutting and mowing I’ve managed to keep it out of the yard but still have around the creek and woodlines. Tried feeding to both pigs and sheep this morning. Pigs ignored it which was surprising since they eat almost anything. Sheep seem to be interested. May have found something. Will continue to give it a try. #homesteading #sheep #permaculture #grownostr image
Unfortunately one of the newborn piglets didn’t make it through last night. Appears that it may have been crushed by the mother. Always tough to start the day with a loss but I suppose that happens from time to time. On the positive - we still have 6 healthy piglets that are now running around with the others! #homesteading #pigs #livestock #grownostr #learning
Contrary to what many news outlets will tell you, eggs will not kill you. We eat LOTS of them. #eggs #chickens #homesteading #grownostr image
The chickens can almost always be found mixed in with our pigs. They have complimented each other very well for us and have been producing great results. Since adding the pigs, our chickens look healthier, require less feed, lay more eggs and work wonders scratching and breaking down pig manure. Not to mention it just makes feeding time entertaining! #chickens #pigs #homesteading #carnivore #grownostr image
To duck or not to duck? That is my debate today. This was from a run of 12 Pekins I did 2 years ago. Moved daily in an A-frame tractor with a slightly longer time frame than that of chickens. From my experience, plucking duck feathers is not exactly enjoyable but we do really enjoy the meat. The yield can also be a bit deceiving as they have larger frames but a much flatter breast and minimal meat on the legs/wings. We do love duck eggs thanks to #[0] always talking about them so at the least we’ll probably pick up some layers. #homesteading #ducks #livestock #grownostr image
Bucky our ram penned up for the night. Would prefer to leave the sheep out on pasture but don’t quite trust the coyotes at this time of year. Typically coyotes tend to be most aggressive just after pups are born. Will likely lock the flock down at night for a few months and monitor the perimeter for any activity. #homesteading #sheep #permaculture #livestock #carnivore #grownostr image
View from the top perimeter of our new pasture this morning. Used high tensile wire with the timeless fence posts. They are oddly flexible but next to impossible to pull out once in the ground. Have a small solar charger on it now but working on a larger build. #homesteading #farm #permaculture #sheep #grownostr #pasture. image
We picked up 3 IPPs about a month ago. My daughter wanted to name them. Needless to say their names are Banana, Strawberry and Blackberry. This is Banana enjoying the morning meal #homesteading #pigs #livestock #carnivore #grownostr image
Love listening to the constant beat of our ram pump. These things work wonders in areas where electricity isn’t an option. All that is required is some PVC pipe and a little bit of elevation. 1 foot of intake drop will create roughly 7 feet of lift. We pump from a creek bed to a 55 gallon drum about 75 yards out into one of the pastures. From there a few simple fittings and hoses and we have water to the animals. Thinking about tapping an overflow hose that can be moved around for some extra irrigation over the dryer months. Tank sits up about 4 ft to give some pressure. All in maybe 15 feet of lift across that distance. #homesteading #water #pump #livestock #farm #grownostr
They are barely through the gate and got right to work! #homesteading #sheep #livestock #farm #carnivore #grownostr image
Perfect Sunday for some pasture work. Hoping to get the sheep out here this afternoon. #homestead #livestock #sheep #grownostr #PA #carnivore image
