IPPs are starting to look better after their dose of Ivermectin but we lost two of the Guinea hog piglets. We’ve had some tough luck with our first pigs but will continue to move forward and learn from our mistakes. Fortunately the others are starting takeoff in size. Still should have no issues filling a few freezers come winter. #homesteading #pigs #grownostr #farm #livestock image
Turns out that when we brought in the IPP piglets we also brought in mange mites. I noticed that they had a tendency of scratching when we got brought them here but they looked healthy and it didn’t seem excessive. Little did I know that this was just the beginning of a much larger issue. Fast forward a little over a month and the a litter of piglets in the meantime from our Guineas and we discovered pretty clearly that all had the scratching issue and began to show the typical symptoms of scaly skin and some sores. Some worse than others and some not at all. While I try to stay as natural as possible and medication free - I decided to treat all with an ivermectin injection. From everything I read, this is the quickest most effective method for eliminating mites. All went fairly well with the most difficult part being catching and avoiding mama pig. Lesson learned for all livestock moving forward: Separate stock brought in from the outside for a period of time before introducing to the rest. #homesteading #pigs #livestock #lessonlearned #farm #grownostr
Covering some of the garden as we expect a frost tonight. Temps expected to touch 30. Was 80 yesterday here in PA. #homesteading #gardening #spring #grownostr image
One of our IPPs has a pretty nasty gash in its side. I’m not sure about the cause but maybe a bite from our sow. Thought it could be from an old piece of fence but doesn’t seem to be likely with how she’s cut. Read that peroxide is helpful so gave her a good spray last night. Seems to be doing fine. Anyone else have experience with pig wounds? #homesteading #pigs #grownostr
Pigs are great for many reasons but if you want to keep things nice do not put them anywhere near. They have now discovered the overflowing water tank from our ram pump and decided to dig a mud hole to wallow in. #homesteading #pigs #grownostr image
Carnivores can have a drink here and there too. Happy Friday🍻 #homesteading #grownostr #beer image
Our guinea hog piglets and IPPs have become best friends. This is how they are often found sleeping. Still debating how many of the guineas we’ll actually keep once weaned but they do make for some good entertainment running amongst the other pigs and chickens. #homesteading #pigs #livestock #grownostr image
Tonight’s #carnivore dinner with my two year old commanding shrimp to be put on her plate as I took this. Still have tons of chicken left from last year’s runs so trying to get through that before the new birds arrive. #chicken #shrimp #foodstr #grownostr image
Looks like the sheep are creatures of habit and were not letting my poly wire contain them out in the pasture last night. Found them chilling in the shade in their main pen this morning - lol happy Monday! #homesteading #sheep #carnivore #grownostr image
And there we have it - moved into the next paddock and right to work. We have been locking the sheep down in the main pen nightly due to the coyotes having spring pups and being known to be more aggressive. As the sheep move away from the pen it becomes more and more work to get them to and from so they will now stay out on pasture. I’m considering running a sort of chute out of a single poly wire to allow access and make supplying water easier but for now they will stay out. #homesteading #sheep #carnivore #rotationalgrazing #grownostr image
Last day in this paddock for the sheep. Will be moving to the next this afternoon. Sheep are certainly not picky eaters as this pasture was never grazed before and full of all sorts of weeds. They mowed it all down and honestly probably could have moved them a day or so ago. Looking forward to seeing how it progresses as they cycle through again this summer. #homesteading #sheep #rotationalgrazing #carnivore #grownostr image
Morning #coffee from the front porch. Had a mild frost last night but quickly warming up with no 30 degree nights in sight. Knock on wood but we may have had our final frost! #homesteading #grownostr image
Back home on the farm for feeding time and sleeping for some. The little Guinea hogs decided they were going to use this old tarp as their bed. #homesteading #pigs #carnivore #farm #grownostr
My wife and I are enjoying our first #coffee together in 9 months from the recovery room as we welcomed our son into the world last night!! #family #grownostr
Upgraded energizer is on and should provide us plenty of power for the new pasture! #solar #homesteading #permaculture #livestock #grownostr
Scurrying around in the rain! We’ve just about had non stop rain since Friday night. Was a little concerned how these little guys would hold up but they appear just fine. #homesteading #pigs #grownostr #rain #carnivore
Was able to take advantage of a quick break in the rain and got some broccoli plugs in the ground. We started over with a new garden this year. Reasoning - the old garden was too far from the house and is now fenced in pasture. Meat is better than vegetables anyway… Advice for any new gardeners out there: Put your garden as close to your house as you can!! Trust me you will spend more time in something a few feet from the house than in the back corner of your property or in my case the middle of a field. #lessonlearned #grownostr #garden #homesteading. image
