A fun memory came up tonight from a time when I was present at a historical pivot in Electronica (pre-electronic dance music.) We were just kids in LA pretty unaware that we were as close to the center of it all. At one private event, I was hanging out at the DJ booth. The DJ who was friends with my circle looked at me and said “Hey can you watch my deck? — I’ll be back.” Within minutes I realized it might be a moment so I began to pull songs based on my very limited knowledge of beat matching. Ended up spinning the rest of that session until the sunrise. At the time, we didn’t know it then but EDC was eventually going to move to Vegas. That there was a major deal in the industry looming around the corner where the words “electronic dance music” would first appear. And that a kid named Kygo would be the first of many to remix music without knowing how to DJ. All things that night we couldn’t imagine. We were kids who barely witnessed the glory days of raves. So naturally the mission was to set our own footprint on everything and then everything shifted. For anyone wondering— I never had ambitions to spin. I just hung around some very interesting people. Tapped my forearms out tonight for the first time since I have returned to climbing. Feels good.
