Just to explain a bit, it’s not that there are no direct flights to Taiwan. The problem is that when you leave mainland China, if they know your next stop is Taiwan, they won’t let you exit. A long time ago, people from mainland China and Taiwan could travel freely, but that’s not the case anymore. As a Chinese citizen, you can’t go to Taiwan directly now. You have to go through another place first, the closest one is usually Hong Kong. When you fly back from Taiwan, Taiwan doesn’t care where you go, even if it’s mainland China. But when you enter mainland China again, immigration might “educate” you a bit 😄

About to leave Taiwan, just wanted to write down a few quick thoughts. Right now there are no direct flights from mainland China so we flew through Hong Kong. Putting politics aside, people in Taiwan were really nice. A few small things I noticed 1. Taxi drivers always stop for people at crosswalks, even on quiet streets. 2. There are almost no trash bins, so people carry their trash with them, sometimes back to the hotel, but the streets are super clean. 3. Night markets are crowded but no pushing at all. 4. Drivers like to chat, and once they knew we were from the mainland, they gave us lots of tips. A lot of our plans were made last minute because of them. 5. Compared to the mainland, Taiwan is much less digital. Many places don’t take cards or mobile pay, cash works best. Took a bit to get used to, but probably easier for foreigners. 6. Also noticed way more foreigners than in cities like Shanghai. Maybe it’s these small things that make people feel comfortable here. Taipei might not be very new, but the vibe comes from the people. The kindness, order and manners feel natural, like something built over time. Hope there can be more exchanges in the future, so more people from the mainland can visit Taiwan, and more people from Taiwan can visit the mainland. TL;DR: We love Taiwan!!! 🫶

Last time we watched New Year’s fireworks was in Times Square. Now we’re in Taipei with our kids, watching Taipei 101. Life moves fast! Happy New Year!

The resort is called Thaiwoo, near the Great Wall, north of Beijing, and it's one of venues for 2022 Winter Olympics

🇨🇳 Traveling by train with my daughter. She doesn't like the train meal, so I ordered KFC from the next station directly on the train app. When the train arrived, someone boarded and delivered the food directly to our seats. Logistics on another level! 🔥
