On August 11th, we continued our mission to advance Bitcoin education worldwide. This time, in collaboration with Paystand, We had the opportunity to work with the Arhuaco community in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.
โ Who are the Arhuacos?
The Arhuacos are an Indigenous people who view their territory as the โHeart of the World.โ Their culture emphasizes harmony with nature, guided by their spiritual leaders, the Mamos. They speak Iku, dress in traditional white clothing with symbolic conical hats, and are known for crafting mochilas, handwoven bags with deep spiritual meaning. They are deeply connected to the land and actively defend it against threats like mining, armed conflict, and environmental harm. As โElder Brothers,โ they see themselves as guardians of Earthโs balance.
How Bitcoin Entered Their Lives The Arhuacos were introduced to Bitcoin at the Bitcoin Conference in Medellรญn, where Spanish-speaking members were invited by paystand.org to explore how Bitcoin could serve their community. There, they also met MotivPeru, whose work with the Quechua people sparked interest in visiting Peru to see Bitcoin in action.
๐ฑ A Connection with the Quechuas
In Peru, the Arhuacos saw how Quechua communities use Bitcoin for savings, commerce, and tourism. Their shared values helped form an instant connection: Nature-based spirituality Spiritual leadership Sustainable agriculture Communal living and reciprocity Preservation of language and identity Defense of territory and culture.

Building on this experience, Paystand and My First Bitcoin organized a three-day educational program in the Arhuaco territory.

The goals of the training include roughly four long term goals. Firstly, to introduce Bitcoin as a tool to complement traditional bartering. Secondly, to promote financial autonomy through respectful, locally relevant education. Furthermore, we aimed to train community leaders to guide conversations around value, money, and freedom. Finally, the program included philosophical dialogue, hands-on activities, and value-driven lessons. At the end, each participant received a certificate of participation, symbolizing not just completion but a meaningful step toward financial empowerment.
Weโre grateful for the opportunity to bring free and open source Bitcoin Education to all corners of the earth, especially to communities like the Arhuacos in Colombia.

May 13, 2025 โ We are proud to announce that My First Bitcoin has received a $1 million grant from #startsmall. With this financial support from Jack Dorsey's philanthropic initiative, we will continue to serve grassroots Bitcoin education initiatives worldwide.
This grant accelerates our work in the creation and distribution of free and open-source Bitcoin education materials and infrastructure. It will not only help us improve existing resources, such as the Bitcoin Diploma, Bitcoin Intro Course, and teacher training workshops, but also to scale our digital platforms like our Online School and Community Hub.ย ย
As a non-profit, founded in 2021, we have grown from a local project into a global movement. Besides creating curricula and frameworks, our team has directly taught tens of thousands of in-person students, as we workshop and refine our materials based on real world feedback.
In 2023, we launched the Independent Bitcoin Educators Node Network, providing a space for others to join us on our mission. The network spans 65+ projects from 35+ countries, including circular economies, meetup organizers and other grassroots projects. All commit to the same six pillars: that their education is independent, impartial, community-led, Bitcoin-only, quality, and focused on empowerment over profit.
While we support that network, it is now self-governing. We always seek to give power-to, rather than have power-over.
John Dennehy, founder and Executive Director of My First Bitcoin, explains:
โThe revolution of Bitcoin education is that it teaches students HOW to think, not WHAT to think. Funding from sources with their own incentives is the greatest vulnerability that threatens that. Education will be captured by whoever funds it. We will never take any government money and frequently turn down funding from corporations and companies. The subtle influence of funding has ruined fiat education and we need to create alternative models for the revolution of Bitcoin education to realize its full potential.โ
Funding for Bitcoin education must be transparent.
This grant is a huge win for all of us. For Bitcoin itself, but even more for Independent Bitcoin Education as a whole. It enables us to serve the global community better than ever before. It shows everyone what can be achieved if you stay close to your values. โMy First Bitcoin is a proof-of-concept for all independent Bitcoin educators that if you stay on the mission, even when it's challenging, then you will come out the other side even stronger,โ added Dennehy.

Over the past few years, weโve seen growing demand for our resources around the world, and we remain committed to serving everyone in the Bitcoin space who needs support. We will continue to lead by example, we will continue to push the limits, and we will continue to reimagine whatโs possible. We do not seek to please power in this world, we seek to create a proof-of-concept for a better one where the individual is empowered and able to think critically.

In 2022, we started teaching this workbook to 38 public school teachers in El Salvador. Last year, it was embraced by over 50 educational projects from more than 30 countries. The Bitcoin Diploma is indirectly supporting grassroots initiatives with tools to implement in their local community.
