This is a popular misunderstanding. Zen is moment by moment *seeing reality as-it-is*. Without compromise or indulging our pet concepts and ideas about how things should be. This is always painful for people because they have to let go of cherished beliefs and opinions. There is nothing chill or mellow about it. It is brutal and unflinching and requires immense bravery. But the people I know who have undergone *rigorous authentic* Zen training are far from being detached. They are the most engaged and passionate people I have ever met.
