Man's nature can be said to be like the wings of the Phoenix. The masculine the right; the feminine, the left. When the two become one they are ignited with the essence of life; warmth, light, and joyful pain. Even as they are consumed by flame they see the beauty of their fire reflected in the glow left on all those around them, and it is in this they can find peace and joy.
As the two are alone incomplete, to deny this fate is to deny nature, and to condemn oneself to a slow withering away; cold lonely, dark, and numb. Life is pain, death is oblivion, yet that which torments us is also that which fulfills us. For the joy and pride of mankind is to be a light in the darkness, no matter how brief, faint, or painful it may be.
Therefore, beloved, let us go to the altar of holocausts and offer up our love to God, that our prayer might be answered and our sacrifice be accepted. For the glow of the courageous sacrifice lives forever, and out of the ashes it births new life, a life that cannot be borne in any other way. For the courageous who persevere to the end shall live forever, while the cowardly waste away into nothingness. Let us pour out our bodies and souls, light them on fire, and never look back, for it is only in dying that we can truly live.

The real core difference between classical society and modern society is that the classical tries to orient itself towards the heavens, while modernity is entirely herd-oriented. Education is the root of the problem here. Modern education is entirely herd-oriented, where teachers come and go, but the child is always surrounded by one's peers and thus learns to take his cues from them. Contrast this with the traditional apprenticeship model, where knowledge is passed from master to student over an extended period of time, forming an intimate personal bond between the two. Here the student learns by looking upward at one who is older and wiser, and more knowledgeable of not only one's craft, but of the transcendent truths of the world. The student is always striving upwards, to reach new heights, to catch up to and one day surpass the master, rather than learning to be a member of the crowd, always looking around to the mob for validation. Rethinking the structure of education is I think the first step towards revitalizing and forming a new truly human society.

It's a mistake to merely reduce religion to the psychological, to think that religion only exists to soothe man's fears of death. Not all religions have the afterlife as a major focus, or even a focus at all. Religion is fundamentally about opening up yourself to the divine and transcendent in one way or another. Sometimes this may be done in order to alleviate some distress or attain some good, either materially or spiritually, but ultimately seeking out and coming to know God is its own reward and satisfaction.
