People act like property can either be government-owned or privately-owned, but this is merely a false dichotomy. The third option that people need to start talking about is property held in common. Most environmental disasters have occurred on property managed by both state and private entities. This is because they are inherently vulnerable to Hayekian knowledge problems and even Misesian calculation problems in contrast to the people homesteading and managing the properties that state and private actors claim on the ground. Were lands to be held in common, it would be there would be significantly less environmental problems than there are now.

Controversies surrounding data centers goes to show why depending on a group of people who are insulated from the consequences of their construction to decide on them is a terrible idea.
