I live in a culture entirely based on gaslighting on every level: politics, media, advertising, at the office, interpersonal. Everyone just claims whatever they'd like to be known for without ever doing anything worthwhile.

If multiple 12-16 hour workdays per week don't get you ahead in any way, chances are that working harder isn't the way in your situation.

They say there hasn't been a signficant breakthrough in theoretical physics since the 60s so I don't really understand why there isn't at least one person in every physics department around the world working on Sci-Fi technology like faster-than-light travel, anti-gravity, and cold fusion. With any of those, humanity as a whole could end its current spell of technological stagnation and societal decay and really do something awesome. I guess as long as most/all research is financed by governments, practically unlimited energy or escaping its clutches by fleeing to the stars just isn't in the cards.
