Months ago when Ledger’s shipping company got hacked, I got spooked and started researching other cold wallet (ahem, signing device) solutions with the intention of migrating. I noticed several influencers praising ColdCard products. The marketing seemed slick. I started feeling remorse for being the normie simpleton who didn’t own one. But I eventually told myself not to knee-jerk every time the FUD hits. It turned out that doing nothing was the right thing, but not for the reason I would have ever envisioned. I’m not unfamiliar with crypto hashing. Before last week, I never heard of dice-rolling your own seed phrase. After several days of reading my nostr feed about the CC meltdown, the message of “multi-vendor multi-sig” has resonated loud and clear in my brain. So that seems like a migration worth moving forward with not necessarily as a FUD-induced knee-jerk, but because it seems prudent to strengthen my self-custody for the long-haul in the age of AI. I know it’s not a perfect solution. But I’m just not gonna build my own seed signer, do hundreds of casino dice rolls, hand jam a bunch of zeros and ones, convert hex values, and consult the BIP-39 word list. I’m not cool enough, and I guess I’m willing to suffer for not being cool (ahem, not a sufficiently self-sovereign anarcho-cypherpunk.) Hell, I’m barely cool enough for nostr if at all. As I understand it, I could pay for a multi-sig service like CASA or Unchained, or I could set it up locally for free with a Sparrow Wallet.
