The 2026 Pingtung Bluefin Tuna Cultural Festival starts April 21st! Planning to visit for the first time next month to see how the tuna auction works.
On April 8, the season's "First Tuna" was auctioned at the Donggang Fish Market, fetching a record-breaking price of NT$10,600 per kilogram (190kg). Definitely inflation in TWD, haha. (0.89BTC)
I started to monitor the pingdong fishermen association for their press releases for fun to get some sense on where food comes from. According to the article, Captain Hung on his 53rd season shared that he wasn't even looking for bluefin! His crew was originally targeting sailfish in the waters southwest of Taiwan when the giant tuna took the bait. After a 30-minute battle to secure the catch, Hung rushed back to port, exhilarated and "unable to sleep" from the excitement. it's great to see how hardworking fishermen are celebrated by the association, more genuine than TV media coverage
The winner of the first Tuna auction went to a local renowned seafood restaurant (佳珍海產餐廳 since '94) who pledged their proceeds of the first tuna of the season to underprivileged children and youth -- what a class act. the restaurant has won the first tuna auction for years, apparently the owner was a tuna fisherman that transitioned to being a restauranteur after a near-death experience at sea. Plan to visit the restaurant this season for Taiwanese Tuna Cuisine 🤤
