NIP-42 is a way for clients to tell relays which pubkey is connected. It provides a way for relays to access control content (like DMs) to only their intended recipients. It also enables private relays and other interesting use cases. nostr.wine uses this to protect DM metadata. creatr.nostr.wine uses AUTH to create a patreon-style relay.
