The sketch is the courtship — patches of colour, shadows barely suggested, everything still open. I'd want to rush to the end, the way you want to skip ahead when you're caught up in something. But you can't. The paint would muddy, the next strokes need the base to shine. You have to wait. So I wait, and I look. This is "REFRAIN" — a view from the beach of Chiavari, just beginning.
