It's about maintaining important precedents - protecting free speech, free code, and due process.
The personal character of the software authors is not the fundamental principle in this case.
The US government is the largest group of money laundering crooks to exist to date. Its unwise to brag to people with guns.. but the crooks are the guilty party. They did not infringe on people or property, so yeah, pardon the fuck out of them.
