The 2009 United Future World Currency coin might just be the first world shitcoin.
It checks a lot of the boxes:
· Top-down design instead of grassroots adoption
· No real use case, just a publicity prop
· Issued by a committee & tied to political agendas
· Hyped as “the future” but never launched in any practical form
· The difference is it didn’t even get far enough to rug-pull anyone, it went straight from announcement to the junk drawer without ever circulating.
A pre-ICO without the ICO.
Backstory - on July 10 2009, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev brought the shiny new “united future world currency” coin to the G8 summit in L’Aquila, Italy.
- It was minted in Belgium, and carried the words “unity in diversity”.
- Was handed out to G8 leaders.
- Part of the United Future World Currency project, an Italian-led push for a supranational reserve currency to replace the US dollar.
- China & some emerging economies supported the idea, but the US, Japan & most of Europe didn't.
In other news, Bitcoin’s Genesis Block had been mined just 6 months earlier…offering a decentralised version of the very thing the G8 was talking about.
