NEW EPISODE
It took 69 years to break up AT&T. IBM outspent the DOJ for 12 straight years and ran out the clock.
Cory Doctorow knows this. He still thinks regulation is how we escape enshittification.
We talked about whyβand whether that faith is warranted.

my take away was that cory often sees regulation as a solution and doesnt believe permissionless protocols are a real solution. i disagree with a lot of his proposed solutions
I obviously like most, but he inspired me to run my own Mastarpn instance and explore Activity pub more.
Mastodon made one of my vibe coded nostr websites better.
I obviously don't agree with him about Bitcoin, but we need to show him the problems it solves instead of preach the good word of Satoshi and hand him a copy of The Bitcoin Standard.

It's always great to clash and test the different approaches to decentralization, and Cory has valuable thoughts.
I am biased towards action that builds an alternative rather than deconstruction, or trying to appeal to corrupted and morally bankrupt governments. He even said AT&T was broken up because some higher ups wanted it, not necessarily because of any political activism from below. It's an unreliable path, leaving freedom to the whims of people.
The new foundation that will bring undeniable results starts with freedom tech, because nothing else gives us real guarantees of a credible exit.
Written law can be there as guidance but has been superseded by permissionless protocols and cryptographic guarantees overall.
Just like speech was obsoleted by writing.
Couldn't have said if better. Thanks for listening.
