Lightning was never meant as a messaging layer and it's terribly inefficient in doing so.

I see, thanks. the Lightning messaging hassome usability though... I can message to my peers or any node operators that have keysend enabled.

I tried cipherchat.app but even without it you can send and receive messages with keysend...
