I think you still are hit for the full price for just the patty at McDonald’s. Burger King sells whopper patties for like $2 instead of the whopper price.
But do they taste good
From my own experience, you have to ask for fresh patties off the broiler. Otherwise, I’m pretty certain you’ll get old steamed meat.
