It certainly depends what your goals are, or how you define success.
I think of the web as a relevance engine, meant to connect people with any other people and URLs they are looking for.
Doing this in a sharded web, as proposed, has clear shortcomings to that end.
Social media becomes village media.
If you get unity right, scale doesn’t matter.
#nostr gets unity right with each event having its own cryptographic identity.
Same with npubs, you can generate as many or as few as you like, and they are all unique.
When unity is solved, you can be as big or as small as you like.
When unity is solved, scale doesn’t matter.
