Much like any scam, once unleashed it's near impossible to reverse. Look at climate change. Imagine people realized it was all a scam tomorrow. Hundreds of thousands of people would be crying about how you can't eliminate their jobs even though their industry is a literal scam. Same with virology and most of modern physics. The grant money is too sweet, and civilizational progress is at a standstill.
