A lot of the reason this was SO bad is because coinkite managed to ensconce themselves as a kind of cornerstone of the culty maxi movement. There was a problem. The maxi community cannot virtue signal as cypherpunk bitcoiners unless they have a self-custody solution. But. Theyre mostly not technical, so they cant understand the trade-offs of software and they're inclined toward conspiracy, so they want protection against edge cases. The plebs NEEDED coinkite. They weren't interested in verifying. The company supported their worldview, their CEO acted "alpha" on social media. They were *right* and their eventual success and wealth was guaranteed if they only kept the faith like good incels. They were (and are) being sold an image and an entire worldview and CC were a foundational part of that. I'm really sorry to everyone who lost their savings and I'm extremely pissed off at the environment that made this such a big exploit.
