Middle age is when you become less fanatical, and more principled.
Well, it should be that.

That's why you feel so calm and unfazed. That, and the chronic lack of sleep.

Porque no los dos?
I am certainly more of both.
Fanaticism is the inability to see complexity or nuance, and a propensity to megalomania and irrationality. It's a vice.
There's no conflict in being a principled fanatic. Just ask your local jihadi.
I'm becoming fanatical about the Kingdom of God. I've rejected and renounced all oaths made to my country and only claim citizenship in God's kingdom. Human government is anathema to Christendom. I will direct my future endeavors towards breaking dependency on the evil slave systems so that if I am ever blessed with children of my own, they can live free of the shackles that bound me and my previous geberations.
Nutty? Maybe, but this is a better way to live in this increasingly awful place, as I will not comply with the system.
Being principled is to be rational. Fanaticism is irrational. You can't be a rational irrational.
You may have your own opinion. Not your own dictionary.
I am uncritical of Jesus' words. I'm very critical of my own imperfect understanding of them. I'm enthusiastic about them, but I am not overly enthusiastic about them. So I suppose that fails the strict definition of fanatical.
Dictionaries are (sometimes) informed opinions on what words mean. I tend to only use dictionaries from the 1800s. I'm very suspect of any past about 1851 (for American English).
Actually, I have to see if I can find any public domain dictionaries to upload to Alex. That is a valuable resource in today's all too fluid Marxist reimagining of words.
Hmmmπ€. You can be fanatically rigid in your adherence to your principles. Sometimes to the point of irrationality.
You aren't adhering to a principle, if you are irrational.
I put them at opposite ends of a scale because they are effectively antonyms.
This might sound somewhat hypocritical but people can still act rationally in their support of fanatical beliefs (sometimesπ
). Obviously, this isn't the case for all. I see your point, though. Fanatical behavior is too often driven by irrationality.
