It's a good time to move away from uploading your family photos/videos to cloud storage offered by big tech (apple, google, microsoft, amazon, facebook).
Consider self hosted free and open source software solutions instead. I like Photoview and Photoprism, but there are plenty of others.

Have you used immich? I think I was looking at photoprism because exif & facial recognition/easy categorization.
Moving off apple’s ecosystem is fucking painful.
I tried it a while back. I didn't like that you had to upload the photos into the portal (and it would rename them), rather than just scrape a directory and create the albums. This might have changed since.
Ya that’s dumb. I’m gonna fuck with ‘em myself at some point soon.🤞
I’m using Nextcloud and Photoprism.
I also did some experiments with Immich.
Both Nextcloud and Immich do auto uploading your phone camera roll 👍🏻
I absolutely encourage people to selfhost stuff but it’s important to remember that if you don’t put the disks in raid or regularly back them up to one or more different drives, you only need one drive failure to lose all your photos/videos.
Excellent point!

Same with Google Photos; Google purposefully made it so that evacuating you data from them requires hours and hours of meticulous exporting and verifying thst you did get the right photos out.
Hey homie your lightning address isn’t taking zaps
Raid is not backup. It is for availability.
For backup, we have the 3-2-1 rule.
It’s not backup but it’s a measure to handle drive errors
I should buy a second drive to setup raid 1 soon.
Yes! Self-hosting for full data control, privacy and more.
wow this is amazing
