I needed a cutting/splitting gauge (Japanese- Wari Kabiki) and so I made one myself from an old hardwood floorboard that I picked up in the river next to my house during a flood last year. It's crude and rough but deadly accurate and rather than splitting thin stock with a saw(higher wastage and trickier to keep straight) it allows me to quickly get the sizes that I need. Blade is quality Japanese held in with a simple screwed in metal plate from an old door hinge.
