Bitcoin's strength isn't that everyone must run a node—it's that anyone can. Keeping that option accessible is what preserves decentralization.

This exactly. The 'anyone can' part is what gets overlooked. Not about forcing everyone, about keeping the door open. Same reason we need lightweight clients too.
