Control if the media has been consolidated into the hands of a few people and most of what is going on is suppressed from appearing in mainstream news. Even opposition news sources are afraid to be too critical because the Trump admin has been using the govt as a weapon against anyone speaking out against it.
There are plenty of outraged people and huge protests have happened, but they are minimally covered. Have you heard of the "No Kings" protest? There was one a couple months ago with 100k+ people turning out in every major city, and there's another this Saturday, but you probably won't see much reporting on it.
The only place I've found where I feel like I see what's really going on is Reddit where there are daily posts about ICE rounding up and detaining people with no warrants and no due process. Doesn't matter if they are citizens or not, they base their actions on the color of your skin. Lawful citizens and residents have been held for days and even deported.
I don't think the left is defeated, but it is being beaten down and suppressed and people are afraid. The current admin wants them to violently fight back so they can justify even more extreme measures, but they have been mostly peaceful despite all the law enforcement attempts to provoke and escalate things. Anything that even looks like a riot or property damage will be run on a loop in the media despite 99% of the rest of a protest being peaceful. Unfortunately it's a bit of a catch 22 because undisrupting peaceful protest is pretty easy to ignore.
Anyway that's how I see the situation right now. I know Reddit is considered a left wing shithole, and it may be true, but I think it's a bigger risk to let yourself be locked in to one media bubble which makes you susceptible to propaganda. I just try to remain aware of the bias and skeptical of everything I read, but when I see daily videos of peaceful people being chased down by guys in masks I have to believe that it's happening on a large scale.

That's a good answer.
I'm sure it's part of it, but the Democrats I know IRL seem less animated than normal. That's why I said they seem defeated.
There's also the question of why this administration is able to squash resistance from the corporate press, when they weren't able to before.
