Dollars are just a proxy for value. I could have valued it in loaves of bread, or ounces of gold, or days of unskilled labor (how I estimated the $10 figure) but that would just be opaque.

I judge based on purchasing power. Dollars are just a simple way to indicate purchasing power for now.
