I'm just surprised at how many new users think Nostr makes you anonymous, when it's completely opposite. It makes you very public and exposed (unless you take your own measures).

Yeah. I learned that just by reading the basics when I joined. And asking awkward questions. Like I do now.
Nostr makes everyone anonymous, not private. Be careful what you share if you want to remain anonymous, also a VPN doesn't hurt to have.
I would say is "allows one to be anonymous".
It doesn't make anyone anonymous, especially when getting a (nearly?) non-fakable ID is part of using Nostr. It starts off with giving you a solid identifier.
