bitcoin can be hacked the same way, can it not? make self hosting complicated (e.g legal requirements) and issue paper money representing bitcoin that you later decouple

True, but I feel like it has already started. Bitcoin ETFs and Saylors "converting bitcoin to compamy shares" tactic are the first abstraction layers. The opt-code knots debate amongst other things introduced the psycological deterrant of "if you run a node you might host cp" as well as eu regulation that now requires exchanges like bitstamp to validate wallet ownership on withdrawls and bitcoin registers all make it harder to self host amd not go the convinient route of using bitcoin via an fiatesque abstraction layer.
