Mount Mitchell, the tallest east of the Mississippi, is named after a university professor- Elisha Mitchell.
He died on June 27, 1857, after slipping and falling sixty feet into a pool at the base of a waterfall near the mountain while remeasuring to refute a rival’s challenge.
