What do you believe about God?
Why do you believe it?
These two questions are intertwined in ways that most people do not think deeply about. The second question is more important than the first in many ways. When I think about God, I have questions. I can't just let go and say, "Sure that sounds good." I need to understand to the best of my ability why the world is the way is. I need to know, not only what God's will is, but why I believe that it IS His will. Going to Church and being spoon fed rules and platitudes about Christian living and the Bible is not going to be enough. I need to delve deep and understand why I believe what I believe. If I don't understand this, then do I really believe it?
βThe brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. Now these people were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.β Acts 17:10β11
To truly understand why you believe what you believe, you need to know the source material. God's words were written by human hands for us to read and know His will. Reading the His Bible will help you to understand Him. Hearing someone talk about someone is different from hearing the person in question actually speaking. We should always be checking what our leaders say against the measuring stick of the Bible. I am not saying teachers and preachers are bad, but you have a responsibility to verify what they are saying is Biblically correct before adopting that teaching as your own. It is easy to be led astray into false doctrine if you don't know what the Bible actually says. Trust me, the deeper that you dig into His words, the more profound you will find them.
I encourage you to read your Bible and pray to God asking for understanding.
