My lightning setup is entirely self-hosted, with most of it in my house. There's one external VPS for lnbits to live on so that external connections can reach it without an enormous headache; but that VPS tunnels securely to my LAN for node connections. It was actually quite hellish to set up and depressingly flaky but totally worth it.
