The Sassoon family were Baghdadi ✡Jews who fled Ottoman Iraq to Bombay in the 1830s. They built much of their wealth as major traders in the legal opium commerce from India to China after the Opium Wars, later controlling a large share alongside British firms. The Sassoon family made a fortune flooding China with opium, getting millions addicted while the drug devastated families and tore the country apart.
