Zone training is 100% the way, especially in your mid 40's like me. I like zone 2 also. Keep doing it and we get faster/better at that same rate.
Pushing toward max heart rate is completely pointless in middle age (and above) and the risks skyrocket, especially in cold weather. Fun fact - shovelling snow is statistically an extremely dangerous activity.

I’m headed to a high school track/athletics practice. Zone training would be both silly for these athletes and detrimental to performance, at least in the America high school system. But as their 50 yr old coach, if I can ride the bike for 30-60 min most days at a HR of 120 lower, and then go to receive, I’ll be a better coach. Clear head, energized, and fully recovered by bedtime.
Now I need to get some weights in the weekly plan. Or just do 25 push-ups for each annoyance during the day like nostr:nprofile1qqsx0tdgudz9xt9lstcwwqj89cjv0ztwpcwfvg674ja25juxzczjzugpp4mhxue69uhkummn9ekx7mqpz3mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduqkjvnx That’s probably the place to start.
