The way I see it, if the argument is that spam is subjective, then it should be left for the node runner to decide. Therefore, having the ability to adjust settings and filter what one believes to be spam, is the correct approach.

I agree with this and would also add that part of an individual's deciding factor could involve the ability to create your own block templates for mining fairly effortlessly with knots and datum gateway. As a Bitcoin node runner, I should have the say in what I want Bitcoin to be/become. That's how consensus works. I could see future implementations providing profile settings for node operators to select from kind of like the different tiers of ocean mining. Decentralize everything.
