Yes nodes validate the chain, and even relay transactions unless you are a retarded filter enthusiast, but the economic activity of your node is meaningless to everyone else. The economic activity on a node that is very active is meaningful to a lot of people. If you run your node with different consensus rules it really doesn’t matter.
